Pre-WWII Grapeleaves Meissen
Hello Mr. Mitchell,
At the end of World War II, my grandmother was working for the US Army as a secretary and was sent to Berlin. In Berlin, she purchased a COMPLETE pre-war tableware set in the Grapeleaves pattern, scalloped edges, on the blackmarket for cigarettes. When she purchased this set, it was with the understanding that it was already antique or old (she was told from the '20's). My grandmother NEVER used the set, always keeping it away from the perilous hands of little children, though it followed her and her husband (a career Army officer) across the globe, from Germany, to Nebraska, to Japan, Alabama, and Florida. She has recently begun to disperse her collection amongst her children and my mother was the recipient of the dessert set--four saucers, cups, and dessert plates. Looking at the trade markings on the pieces, I have been able to place them in the 1815-1923 time period. The imprinted number on one piece is 83 8 and the others are similarly numbered. They are also marked, in blue, with a number (all in the 20's) and 2 dots (ex. ..). I am interesting in knowing if I can more accurately date these pieces and how I would determine their value. Thank you for your time and assistance!
