When is Meissen saleable or not? Minimize

Laurence Mitchell is constantly being asked to value Meissen that has little or no painted decoration or design.

Particularly from the middle of the 18th century and onwards until today, the Meissen Manufactory became very aware there was a great thirst for certain of their products more so than others.

The most popular of items were service pieces, tea  and coffee sets and dinner services.

As a manufacturer of porcelain the easiest task of making bulk porcelain was that of no painting, followed by that of no or little modeling design and that of gilding. Gilding became the most popular of colour to be applied to any piece making it far more attractive than any piece in the plain white.

When it came to the construction of the pieces being manufactured the more simply constructed designed and painted pieces were the cheapest to produce. Likewise going back as far as the manufactory's origin service wares produced in the white without any form unless they are of a rare shape have a far lesser value than those peices produced with modeling design and decoration. Follow Meissen's course of history, records of prices attained at auction will normally illustrate the more complicated the modeling and decoration a higher value will be attributed to the piece. Unfortunately 20th century service wares have little value, even those that are painted with more interesting romantic and other scenes were produced in abundance. There are few collectors of them therefore there are challenges associated with selling them.

Later of during the year there will be an opportunity for everyone to be able to offer their wares on Buymeissen. For more updates register your name
